SHOPPING FRENZY CAKE 

MATERIALS

  • .20cm ( 8in ) square cake
  • 30cm ( 12in ) square cake board
  • 315g ( 10oz / 1 ¼  cups ) buttercream
  • mauve, purple, pink, aqua, green, yellow, cream & black food coloring pastes  
  • 1.5kg ( 31b ) sugarpaste / rolled fondant
  • icing/confectioners' sugar in a sugar shaker
  • sugar glue
  • lengths of licorice/licorice 

EQUIPMENT

  • hologram wrapping paper
  • non-toxic glue stick
  • large rolling pin
  • sharp knife
  • large heart cutter
  • large flower cutter
  • cocktail stick/toothpick
  • fine paintbrush 

SHOPPING FRENZY CAKE METHOD:

Cover the cake board with the hologram wrapping paper. Trim the crust from the cake and slice the top flat. Cut the cake into four equal squares Trim each square to taper in at one end Spread a layer of buttercream over the surface of each cake.

Colour 315g ( 10oz ) of sugarpaste mauve . 375g ( 12oz ) purple. 315g ( 10oz ) aqua. 315g ( 10oz ) green . 15g ( ½ oz ) yellow and 60g ( 2oz ) cream. Roll out the mauve sugarpaste and cut two 13cm ( 5in ) squares. From the top of each, trim a little handle opening Place a cake down onto a mauve square and smooth the sides up around the cake Put the other sugarpaste square on top and glue the joins together.

Cover the green bag in the same also with cut-out handles. Then make a purple and an aqua bag without cut-out handles Position the bags on the cake board. Using 7g ( ¼ oz ) of yellow and some of the mauve sugarpaste trimmings, decorate the bags using the heart and flower cutters Roll two thin sausages of white sugarpaste to make the handles for the aqua bag and stick them in place. For the purple bag handles, roll two thin sausages of cream and indent along the length using the side of a cocktail stick to give a rope effect.

To make the girl, first color 45g ( 1 ½  oz ) of sugarpaste dark pink. Make the dress by modeling a teardrop shape, flattening around the base, and bending slightly. Using 45g ( 1 ¼ oz ) of cream sugarpaste, roll a ball for her head, and stick on to the dress with sugar glue Position on the cake board, sticking the back of her head against the mauve bag the cream two hands a-arms.

With the remaining cream sugar paste, shapes two hands and a nose. Push licorice arms and legs into the dress using sugar glue to secure them. Stick the hands in place. Using 15g ( ½ oz ) of purple sugarpaste for each, shape the platform shoes and press on to the legs Roll long yellow teardrops for the hair strands Stick on each side of her head, curling up the ends.

Shape purple balls to decorate her dress Flatten two white balls for the eyes and two aqua balls for the iris. Press the end of a paintbrush to mark the lip center. Dilute the black and pink food coloring pastes separately with a few drops of water and paint her face Roll out any trimmings and cut the clothes, folding and sticking them into each bag
