The story of Little Bo Peep is one of the most popular nursery rhymes ever
LITTLE BO PEEP CAKE
MATERIALS
- 2 liter ( 4 pint / 10 cups) bowl-shaped cake
- 30cm ( 12in ) round cake board
- 345g ( 11 oz /1 1/3 cups ) buttercream.
- 1.5kg ( 31b ) sugarpaste / rolled fondant
- yellow, green, blue, cream & pink food coloring pastes
- icing/confectioners' sugar in a sugar shaker
- 60g ( 2oz / ¼ cup ) royal icing.
- black food coloring pen
EQUIPMENT
- large rolling pin
- sharp knife
- cake smoother
- templates
- 5cm ( 2in ) circle cutter
- cocktail stick/toothpick
- piping bag
LITTLE BO PEEP CAKE
METHOD:
Trim the crust from the cake and slice the top flat. Cut a layer in the cake, then sandwich it together with buttercream Position it on the board and spread it with buttercream. Color Ikg ( 21b ) of sugarpaste yellow-green using green food coloring paste with a touch of yellow Roll out and cover the cake and board Smooth around the shape and trim the excess from around the edge Use a cake smoother to create a smooth surface.
To make the bushes,
first color 410g ( 13oz ) of sugarpaste green. Thickly roll out and cut two
of each of the bush shapes, using the templates. Smooth the edges of the bushes
to round off, then position around the base of the cake securing them in place
with dabs of royal icing.
Color 30g(1 oz) of sugar
paste blue .7g(1/4 oz) cream and 7g(1/4 oz ) yellow.Following the photograph,
model Little Bo Peep's dress and shoes. Using cream, model two legs tapering
in at the ankle. Stick in place with royal icing Roll two tiny balls of white
for the socks Stick the shoes on next. Roll out a piece of white and cut out
the apron, using the template. Roll a cocktail stick over the surface to thin
and frill, then stick on to the dress Model two white balls for the sleeves,
pressing firmly onto the dress and sticking with royal icing Model a flattened
circle, and from it cut a ' v ' to shape a collar.
Roll a ball of cream
sugarpaste for Little Bo Peep's head, indenting her mouth with a cocktail stick Roll a tiny nose and two arms, rounding
off the ends for hands. Roll out yellow sugarpaste and cut a circle, then cut it in half. Stick in position for the front of her bonnet smoothing up at the
front, then model a flattened ball with the remaining yellow and stick on the
back of her head. Roll a long, thin sausage of white and bend to make her
crook.
Color 30g(1 oz) of
sugarpaste pale and 7g(1/4 oz) dark pink.To make the sheep split the pale pink
sugarpaste into five. Model a rounded teardrop for each head, and two
teardrop-shaped ears Indent the bottom of each face with the side of a
cocktail stick Roll dark pink noses. Put the royal icing into the piping bag
and cut a small hole in the tip Stick the sheep in place, peeping out of the
bushes, then pipe their hair, swirling the royal icing into curls. When the
cake is dry, gently draw on little black dots for the eyes
USEFUL TIP
Pinch around the front
of the base of Little Bo Peep's teardrop-shaped dress to create the edge of
the skirt. Place the dress so that it is sitting over the legs.
