SNAKE PIT CAKE

 One snake for every birthday year will make
 this cake simply wriggle with fun 

MATERIALS.

  • 23cm ( 9in ) ring-shaped cake,
  • 25cm ( 10in ) round cake board
  • 315g ( 10oz / 1½ cups ) buttercream.
  • 1.5kg ( 31b ) sugarpaste / rolled fondant .
  • brown, red, yellow, green, mauve, blue & black food coloring pastes.
  • icing/confectioners' sugar in a sugar shaker
  • sugar glue

EQUIPMENT

  • sharp knife
  • large rolling pin

SNAKE PIT CAKE METHOD:

Trim the crust from the cake with a sharp knife and slice the top flat. Turn the cake over and position the cake in the center of the cake board. Spread a layer of buttercream over the surface of the cake to help the sugarpaste stick.

Color 750g (1/2 lb ) of sugarpaste brown. Roll out and cover the cake completely. smoothing around the shape and inside the ring Trim the excess sugarpaste from around the edge of the cake board. Using your hands, indent the sugarpaste all the way around the cake, creating an uneven surface. Model different-sized flattened balls with the brown sugarpaste trimmings and stick them randomly over the cake

Take five 140g ( 4 oz ) pieces of sugarpaste and color red, yellow, green, mauve and To make  a snake roll a sausage of colored sugarpaste with a thin sausage of another color, tapering in at one end for the tail and rounding off the other end for the head. Holding the head, curl the snake's body around and stick it in position with sugar glue.

Make all the other snakes this way. The amounts of sugarpaste quoted will be enough to make eight snakes. Mark each snake's mouth using a knife. To finish, model flattened white sugarpaste ovals for the eyes. Color a small amount of sugarpaste black and model the pupils, sticking them in place quite close together on the eyes.
