ITALIAN MUSTARD FRUITS

These are a specialty of Cremona, in Lombardy They're rather like a fresh fruit relish and they make an excellent accompaniment to meat When in season, other fruits peaches, apricots, etc- can be added. 

YOU WILL NEED :

  • 1 pear 
  • 1 apple 
  • 1 orange 
  • 60g ( 20z ) green grapes 
  • 60g ( 20z ) black grapes 
  • 425g can of black cherries 
  • 1½ tablespoons mixed peel 
  • 10 cloves cinnamon sticks 
  • 1/4 cup of red wine vinegar 
  • 1/4 cup water 
  • ½ cup sugar 
  • 2 teaspoons dry mustard 

ITALIAN MUSTARD FRUITS RECIPE:

Peel pear and apple, cut into quarters; remove cores, cut fruit into thick slices. Peel orange, cut into thick slices then cut each slice in half. Remove grapes from stalks, wash, and pat dry. Drain cherries.

Put pear, apple, orange, grapes, and cherries in a large bowl, add mixed peel and cloves, and toss gently. Pack fruit mixture into hot, sterilized jars. Add a cinnamon stick to each jar.

Place wine vinegar, water, and sugar in a saucepan, and stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves. Bring to boil, then reduce heat, and boil gently uncovered for 5 minutes. Add mus tard, and stir until combined. Pour syrup over the fruit to cover com completely. Keep one week before using; once opened, keep refrigerated
