LOVABLE LADYBIRD CAKE METHOD:
Colour 375g ( 120z ) of sugarpaste green. Using icing sugar to prevent sticking roll out the green sugarpaste and cover the cake board. Put the covered board aside to dry.
Trim the crust from the bowl-shaped cake and slice the top
of the cake flat, using a sharp knife. Turn the cake upside down and cover it
with buttercream to ensure that the sugarpaste sticks.
Color 625g ( 1 ¼ lb
) of sugarpaste red. Roll out and cover the cake, smoothing around the shape, then trim any excess from around the edge. Position the cake on the cake
board. Using the back of a knife, mark a line down the center of the
ladybird's back.
Colour 155g ( 5OZ )
of sugarpaste black. Roll 125g ( 4oz ) into a ball-shaped head. Stick in
position using a little sugar glue then, with the circle cutter, press in at
an angle to indent the smile. Dimple the corners of the smile using your
finger.
Push two pieces of licorice into the top of the ladybird's
head and stick a small ball of black sugarpaste on the end of each antenna Roll
two amounts of white sugarpaste into balls and press on to the face for the
eyes.
With the remaining black sugarpaste, model two pupils,
then roll out and cut six circles for the spots to decorate the ladybird's back. Secure the cake with sugar glue.
Color the remaining sugarpaste yellow Model long, yellow teardrop shapes for petals. pressing each shape flat still keeping them fairly thick Stick the petals in position around the ladybird, making sure they do not hang over the cake board edge.
Make smaller and shorter yellow petals for a second layer, encouraging the petals to be used as the photograph opposite then secure in place with sugar glue.
USEFUL TIP
When sticking the ladybird's head to the body, do not use
too much sugar glue as it could slide out of place.
