This smiley sun has got his hat on, and he is ready to come out to play 

SMILING SUN CAKE 

MATERIALS

  • 2 x 1 liter ( 2 pint / 5 cups) bowl-shaped cakes
  • 35cm ( 14in ) round cake board
  • 2kg ( 4lb ) sugarpaste / rolled fondant
  • blue, yellow & black food coloring pastes
  • icing/confectioners' sugar in a sugar shaker
  • 280g ( 9oz / 1 generous cup ) buttercream
  • sugar glue 

EQUIPMENT.

  • large rolling pin.
  • sharp knife
  • cake smoother template 

SMILING SUN CAKE METHOD:

Color 500g ( 11b ) of sugarpaste pale blue. Using icing sugar to prevent sticking roll out and cover the cake board completely, trimming excess from around the edge. Trim the crust from each cake and slice the tops flat. Sandwich the two cakes together to make a ball, then spread buttercream over the surface to help the sugarpaste stick,

Color 1kg ( 2lb ) of sugarpaste yellow Roll out and use to cover the cake completely. smoothing down around the shape and underneath. Cut away any excess pleats of sugarpaste and smooth the joins closed. Position the cake on the center of the cake board and smooth the surface with a cake smoother.

To indent a wide grin, gently press in the rim of the ovenproof bowl that the cake was baked then smooth in, your finger at the corners mouth. Color 45g ( 1 ¼  oz ) of sugarpaste black Roll out the black sugarpaste and cut out the sunglasses, using the template. Stick it in place with a little sugar glue.

For the handkerchief hat, thinly roll out 155g ( 5oz ) of white sugarpaste and cut a measure 12 x  8cm(5 x 3in ). Position on the top sun, pleating the sides by pinching carefully. Make little curly teardrop shapes for the handkerchief corners, then roll small balls for each tie. To make the clouds, roll different-sized balls of white sugar paste, five for the front cloud and four for the back, then roll out the remaining white sugarpaste and cover the clouds completely, smoothing around the shape .
