All children love the idea of a sleep-over in their own back garden 

CAMPING OUT CAKE 

MATERIALS.

  • 20cm ( 8in ) square cake
  • 30cm ( 12in ) round cake board
  • 410g ( 13oz / 1½ cups ) buttercream
  • 1.35kg ( 2 ¼ lb ) sugarpaste / rolled fondant
  • black, blue, navy blue, green, yellow, cream, brown & orange food coloring pastes
  • icing/confectioners' sugar in a sugar shaker
  • sugar glue 

EQUIPMENT

  • large rolling pin
  • sharp knife
  • fork
  • small circle cutter
  • cocktail stick/toothpick 

CAMPING OUT CAKE METHOD:

Trim the crust from the cake and slice the top flat Cut the cake in half and put one har on top of the other. Cut a triangular wedge from either side, cutting down at an outward angle to the base of the first layer Arrange these two wedges on either side of the cake to create the tent's sloping sides Trim a dip in the top Sandwich together with buttercream then spread buttercream over the surface of the cake. Color 90g ( 3oz ) of sugarpaste black Thinly roll out and cut pieces to cover the two ends of the tent.

Color 90g ( 30z ) dark blue. Thinly roll out and cut four triangular-shaped pieces for the inner tent covering sticking them in position with sugar glue. Color 22g ( ¾ oz ) yellow and roll a long, thin sausage for the inner tent trim Colour 625g ( 1 ¼ lb ) blue Roll out and cut a piece slightly larger than the cake for the outer tent covering Roll trimmings into a ball and place at the side to lift up the tent covering for the peeking boy Lift the sugarpaste and cover the cake.

Color 280g(9oz ) of sugarpaste green. Roll out small pieces, position on the cake board, and texture by pressing the prongs of a fork over the surface to give a simple grass effect Colour two pieces of sugarpaste, each weighing 22g ( ¾ oz ), navy blue and red To make the front of the sleeping bags, model two wedges of each color, sticking one on top of the other at either end Smooth up at the front to create a space for the heads.

Color 75g ( 2 ½ oz ) of sugarpaste cream, 45g ( 1 ½ oz ) brown, 60g ( 2oz ) pale brown, and 7g ( ¼ oz ) orange. To make the blonde boy, roll 30g ( 1oz ) of cream into a ball. Indent a smile using the small circle cutter and dimple each corner with a cocktail stick Shape a cream nose, hands, white eyes, and black pupils. Shape flattened pieces of yellow sugarpaste for his hair and arrange them on his head, pinching at the front. Make the other boys in this way.

Make the dog using the pale brown sugar paste. Roll two rounded sausages for the paw and stick one on each boy's head. Shape the head, pinching around the Centre, Model flattened teardrops for the muzzle, indenting with the tip of a cocktail stick Flatten teardrop shapes for ears and a tiny piece of dark brown to make the eye patch Make a black triangular-shaped nose. Make eyes as before. For the chocolate bar, cut a small square o pale brown and indent using a knife Put tiny pieces of brown around the boy's mouth.
